The Healthy Soils for Sustainable Farms Program

The Healthy Soils for Sustainable Farms Program was a major soil health initiative managed by Land and Water Australia and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry through the Natural Heritage Trust, and GRDC. It was a 5 year, $5 million program with 10 key regional projects. These regional projects contributed to the development of a Soil Health Knowledge Bank, The Soil Health Knowledge Bank is a site with consolidated current knowledge and experience in managing healthy soils into one, easy-to-access website with a range of supporting documentation, workshop material and activities. Land and Water Australia has ceased to operate as an organisation.

Our Rural Landscapes (ORL) is an initiative of the Victorian Government aimed at developing innovative technologies for the sustainable development of Victoria’s agriculture sector. The key project relating to soil health is “Understanding and protecting the soils of our rural landscapes” which aims to use genetic techniques to characterise Victoria’s soils and develop a biological soil health test.
